First published in 1960, my 1970 edition contains 62 short pages in which Webb Young boils down the production of ideas to five steps. In fact, I've learnt from this book that really, ideas are produced from experiences, knowledge and a tenacious determination to come up with something cool. He is a predecessor of Draper Daniels, the real person on whom Don Draper is based. In the newspaper that I mentioned in my last post, Oldham quotes a book that he recommends to his readers. Recently I re-read James Webb Young's classic, A Technique for Producing Ideas. Sure, but how do you get those first couple of ideas? More, much more than a technique. It lays out a straightforward, 5-step process for generating new ideas, regardless of the project or subject matter. An tiny, yet interesting book, originally written in 1960 and directed at advertising students. James Webb Young Waking Lion Press (2009). A few months ago, someone I follow on Twitter (I can't remember who) recommended a book originally published in 1965 called A Technique for Producing Ideas. I personally subscribe to the method outlined by advertising success story James Webb Young in his book A technique for producing ideas. One way is to take a look at a very short book called — appropriately enough — ”A Technique for Producing Ideas,” the classic 48-pager from James Webb Young. Since its publication in 1965, A Technique for Producing Ideas has helped thousands of advertising copywriters smash through internal barriers to unleash their creativity. Young is known by many as the father of modern advertising (don't hate him).
